First flown in 1935, the legendary Bf 109 was the standard Luftwaffe single-seat fighter for nearly a decade. One of the attributes that made it such a successful combat aircraft was its suitability for development. The second major redesign during 1939-1940 led to the Bf 109F series which was a significant aerodynamic improvement over the earlier Bf 109E. Considered by many to be the high-water mark of Bf 109 development, the F-series abandoned the wing cannon and concentrated all armament in the forward fuselage with a pair of synchronized machine above and a single 15 or 20 mm Motorkanone-mount cannon behind the engine, the latter firing between the cylinder banks and through the propellor hub. A handfull of Bf 109Fs were used in the Battle of Britain in 1940, but it was in the first half of 1941 that the 'Friedrich' variant came into wide use and the type was used extensively in Operation Barbarossa where it scored many victories against poorly trained and badly organized Soviet forces.

Although photography of these little gems is a challenge for our equipment and limited skills, we hope that we've been able to show the well proportioned model including the detailed canopy, the delicate fuselage complete with exhaust manifolds, supercharged air intake and gun troughs, the wings with ailerons and retracted (but visible!) landing gear, the tail assembly complete the rudder and elevators and even a tiny tail wheel!

While the surfaces are not perfectly smooth (3D printing is done in layers), the plastic used can be sanded and painted much the same way you would handle resin or styrene. The models may still have some powder and oil-like agent on them that needs to be removed by washing in warm water with a drop of detergent in it. While the landing gear is represented in the retracted in-flight position, it should be fairly straight forward to add photo etch parts for a "gear down" rendition, perfect for an air base diorama.
